This paper describes the importance of Nagwichoonjik (the Mackenzie River between Thunder River and Point Separation) as a cultural landscape for the Gwichya Gwich'in in terms of Gwich'in oral history and culture with the goal of designating this stretch of river as a National Historic Site. Nagwichoonjik became a National Historic Site in January 1998.
