This volume of 20 papers was written by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal authors and discusses the present status in Canada of the relationship between Aboriginal people and archaeologists. The paper by GSCI staff Ingrid Kritsch and Alestine Andre "Gwich'in Traditional Knowledge and Heritage Studies in the Gwich'in Settlement Area," presents the roles and responsibilities of the Gwich'in Social and Cultural Institute and gives an overview of the traditional knowledge and archaeological studies carried out in the Gwich'in Settlement Area from 1992-1995. Included is a discussion of how the traditional knowledge and archaeological research is being used to meet a number of needs which range from the identification of culturally significant sites for protection and land management purposes, to the development of more culturally relevant teaching materials for the local schools.
