Mandate and Principles

Mandate

To document, preserve and promote Gwich'in culture, language, traditional knowledge, and values.

Guiding principles

  • Our Elders play a crucial role as teachers. They are the source of traditional knowledge, history, language and culture

  • The preservation and respect for the land are essential to the well-being of our people and our culture.

  • Our family history is important to our identity as Gwich'in.

  • All Gwich'in have a role to play in keeping our traditional knowledge, history, language and culture alive.

  • Cross cultural understanding and awareness between Gwich'in and non-Gwich'in is essential in building a new respect and understanding in today's global community.
